Recruitment Open: Musical Memories: a co-designed pilot study

This research project aims to investigate the benefits of music-based initiatives for older adults living with dementia and their care partners. By exploring different forms of music engagement activities for people living with dementia, this research aims to contribute to our understanding of innovative approaches to address dementia as a public health priority.
We are looking for volunteers for our study: Older Adults living with dementia (55+) and their care partners to participate in a music-based pilot program for older adults living with dementia and their care partners.
Participation in this research is unpaid and completely voluntary, and there are no consequences for not participating. If you choose to participate in this research, there will be no consequences to for withdrawing from the study. Participating would entail completing a 5-minute demographic questionnaire, participating in a 30-minute pre-interview to share your pre-project perceptions of music-based supports for people living with dementia and their care partners. You would also participate in 4 music-based activity sessions, once per month from February to May 2025, which will each last 2 hours in duration and take place at McMaster University and the Art Gallery of Hamilton. Pre/post-session mood questionnaires would be distributed for completion during each session. You would also be asked to participate in a 1-hour focus group after the completion of the 4 sessions.
Participation in this research is completely voluntary and there are no consequences for not participating. If you choose to participate in this research, there will be no consequences to for withdrawing from the study.
This research will:
1. Explore the impacts of a music-based program for people living with dementia on participants well-being and social connection.
2. Examine the perceived benefits and challenges of music-based support program for people living with dementia and their care partners.
This study has been reviewed by the McMaster University Research Ethics Board and received ethics clearance (#7385).
