A growing amount of research indicates that individuals with dementia experience increased life satisfaction, reduced stress, and improvements in their physical well-being when exposed to nature and outdoor settings. The “Exploring the benefits of nature-based activities for older adults living with dementia and their care partners: A pilot study” is the first co-designed study with people living with dementia. I am incredibly grateful to have been selected for the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA) Undergraduate Summer 2023 Research Fellowship, which allowed me to contribute as a Research Assistant (RA) on this project led by Dr. Anthea Innes and Constance Dupuis at The Gilbrea Centre for Studies in Aging. As an undergraduate student, the prospect of joining a research fellowship program was both exhilarating and nerve-racking. One of the most remarkable aspects of my fellowship was the invaluable exposure to interdisciplinary collaboration. Hailing from the Faculty of Science, my work in the Faculty of Social Science broadened my horizons, teaching me the significance of diverse perspectives when tackling intricate research queries. The project had already been in motion long before my fellowship commenced, with shared group sessions involving older adults living with dementia and their care partners. I had worked as a student volunteer and attended these meetings, and it provided me with profound insights into the lives of individuals coping with dementia. During my summer fellowship, I acquired a plethora of skills, from crafting sections of ethics applications and performing site visits and risk assessments. This experience taught me that research is an ongoing process of exploration and experimentation, not solely focused on immediate answers. As I continue my academic journey, I carry with me the lessons and ignited passion from this unforgettable summer. The Gilbrea Centre has not only influenced my academic trajectory but has also left an indelible mark on my personal growth and aspirations.
