iFundMac - Karl Kinanen Public Lecture
The McMaster community recently lost an innovative and pioneering teacher, mentor and advocate. Professor Karl Kinanen passed away in May of this year. He was instrumental in developing gerontology as a field of study in Canada and was a founding faculty member of the School of Social Work. Karl developed the first interdisciplinary course in aging at McMaster in 1980 allowing students from a wide range of disciplines to specialize in aging. Owing to Karl’s pioneering efforts, McMaster has built on his legacy and now offers Honours, Masters and Doctoral degrees through the Dept. of Health, Aging and Society.
The Karl Kinanen Public Lecture that is held each year in Hamilton. The lecture is hosted by Gilbrea Centre for Studies in Aging and features a prominent expert in the field of aging. This public lecture seeks to foster knowledge exchange with the public, service providers and older people. The lecture is free of charge and open to the public. Funds raised for this trust fund will go to continued support of the public lecture established in recognition of Karl Kinanen’s commitment to continuing education in gerontology and community service.
